Portland’s Pittock Mansion
Visiting Portland’s Iconic Pittock Mansion
The Pittock Mansion in Portland Oregon is one of the most beautiful spots to view the city of Portland. On a clear day you can see Mt. Hood, and Mt. Saint Helens from the house and from the lawn. Located just off Burnside and the Portland NW Hills, the Pittock Mansion is a wonderful location for photographs, picnics, walking trails and of course viewing the inside of the Portlands most iconic mansion. The Pittocks were famed for purchasing the Oregonian and making it the most prominent paper in Oregon.
Though not all of the furnishings are from the original house there are some pieces of decor that are said to be the exact furnishings the family owned. The Pittocks sadly only enjoyed the house for 4 years before they both died but the family continued to live in the home with it’s last resident, their grandson, and his father who finally moved out in 1958.
The Pittock mansion was nearly destroyed in 1962 from the Columbus Day storm but was then doomed to be torn down until enough money was raised and the city purchased the property as a museum.
When you walk through the Pittock Mansion you can easily imagine the family living there, the hum of the house, the workers using the back stairs preparing for meals and chores (okay I may be a Downton Abbey fan), big dinner parties, dances and every day life in the early 1900’s. There were at least 3 families living there with kids and I’m sure a lot of activity.
If you decide to go, choose a day that is not too hot, many of the window blinds were drawn so we were unable to see the gorgeous views out of the lead glass windows. Going first thing in the morning when it opens is a great way to avoid crowds. On your way out you can pop into the gift shop for some nice post cards and other Portland related items. The Pittock Mansion hosts several events throughout the year and decorates the Mansion for Christmas time. Please visit the Pittock Mansion website for more information and pricing.
